Book Summary

Seventeen-year-old Kyle Donovan’s life unravels overnight when his mother suddenly vanishes without a trace. What begins as a missing person case quickly turns into something far more disturbing when his father becomes the prime suspect in her presumed murder. As investigators build a case alleging that Kyle’s father killed and dismembered his wife, the town becomes consumed with rumors, suspicion, and fear.

Set in a modern-day Midwestern community of Davenport Iowa, the story closely mirrors real events that many locals recognize—making it feel unsettlingly real. Much of the tension centers around the now-infamous “castle house,” where the family lived, a place that still sparks curiosity and unease. The trial that follows grips the community, but when it ends in a hung jury, no clear answers are given. Instead, the truth remains just out of reach, leaving Kyle—and everyone else—questioning what really happened.

At its core, Missing Pieces is not just a mystery, but an emotional story about a teenager caught between loyalty and doubt. Kyle Donovan is forced to navigate grief, public scrutiny, and the possibility that the person he trusts most may be hiding a terrible secret. Supporting characters—including investigators, community members, and those closest to the family—add layers of perspective, showing how one tragedy can ripple through an entire town.

I chose this book because the author is a local retired teacher, and I actually taught with his son, which made the experience feel very personal. The case itself is also well known in our area, and I’ve even driven past the castle house, making the story feel incredibly close to home.

What makes this book especially compelling is its unresolved ending—just like the real case. If you enjoy true-crime-style mysteries, emotional family stories, and narratives that leave you thinking long after the last page, this book pulls you in and doesn’t let go.
