Book Summary
The Getaway Girls by Dee MacDonald was the perfect mix of fun, heart, and “why not just go for it?” energy—basically made for BOM Squad. The book follows three women in their 60s who decide they’re not done living life on their terms. They leave behind routine, hop into an RV, and head off on an adventure filled with friendship, fresh starts, and rediscovering themselves. It’s an easy, feel-good read with just enough depth to spark great conversations about taking chances, embracing change, and making the most of right now—no matter your age.
Naturally, we took that inspiration and turned it into our own version of a getaway… right here in Davenport 😄
We read the book from June through August 2024 and wrapped it up with a celebration weekend (August 24–26) that fully committed to the theme. Jessica lined up a friend/client who brought an RV and parked it right at my house, giving us our very own Getaway Girls setup. Friday night kicked off with lasagna and garlic bread outside, which somehow tasted even better with a side of laughter and fresh air. At one point, the cutest little girl wandered down the street to see what we were doing, which led to meeting her dad—they had just moved into one of the new houses nearby. Just a casual BOM Squad moment turning into a neighborhood welcome party 😊
The night turned into exactly what you’d expect, staying up way too late, drinks in hand, laughing around the campfire. Some of us slept in the RV to fully commit to the experience, while others opted for the house… balance is important.
The next day, we leveled up. We all got dressed up—but I was especially committed as Mrs Roper from Three’s Company, which felt very on brand for the book characters. We headed to a Mrs. Roper BINGO fundraiser at CASI Senior Center, complete with Bloody Mary’s and mimosas—so yes, the day started strong. From there, we kept things rolling with a little pub crawl at Jack’s and Bley’s, followed by group photos at Vander Veer Botanical Park to capture the outfits, the laughs, and the chaos.
Sunday, Patty cut my hair, which like the character Gill needed badly in the book (as did I). Just another BOM squad moment demonstrating out commitment to doing things from the books we read.
This book—and our weekend—was the perfect reminder that you don’t need a plane ticket to have an adventure. Great friends, a little creativity, and a willingness to just go for it is really all it takes.
Honestly… I think those Getaway Girls would’ve been very proud of our Davenport version. 💛
